A review of Bed Bugs in Preston, Chorley and Leyland in 2010
One of the most reviled and misunderstood pests known to mankind is the bed bug Cimex lectularius. How many of us dropped off to sleep at night as young ones with the words of our elders in our ears “sleep tight and don’t let the bed bugs bite”
Bed Bugs probably started to dine on people at about the period we moved into caves, the bat bugs Cimex pilosellus and Cimex pipistrella mostly feed on bats and it is possible that bat feeding species of bug evolved to dine on our blood when our ancestors began sleeping in bat infested caves.
Until the production of DDT in the early 20th century bed bugs were common unwelcome guests in most poor quality homes.
The later part of the 20th century saw pest control companies dealing with very few bed bug call outs indeed, their presence being mainly restricted to cheap holiday lodgings and student lodgings etc.
Many people mistake dust mites, which can’t be seen by to the unaided eye, with bed bugs which most definitely are.
Adult bedbugs are reddish, about a a few milemetres in size and very engorged after feeding on human blood.
Lacking a suitable human target to feed on they can stay dormant for long periods of up to 18 months.
Signs of a bed bug infestation are usuallyspots of blood on bedding and on the edges of mattresses and some people can react extremely badly to their bites.
The early 21st century saw bed bug numbers exploding across the entire planet, the easy availability of world travel and economic migration have both been blamed for the return.
What is definite is that that are now staging a real comeback not only in poor quality homes but high class hotels, schools and even hospitals.
A single stay in an infested bed is all it needs, they hide in your suitcases or bags. Pest control companies are also now seeing cases of transport related bed bug infestations on tubes, trains and buses so a simple journey home on an infested tube or train can be enough to spread the infestation into your own home.
They are an difficult pest to eradicate as contrary to popular belief they do not just live in beds. They hide in any nook and cranny conveniently close to a sleeping target, beds, electrical sockets, televisions, bed-side telephones etc and clearing them is both difficult and time consuming. They have even been discovered found living under the toe-nails of infirm people and in the creases of flesh of very fat people.
They are not a pest that can be tackled by an amateur and a pest control professional will almost certainly be needed.
