Boat Registration – Is it Necessary?

February 16th, 2012

Many people don’t realize at first that, just like with a car or truck or motorcycle, you have to get a boat registered at the DMV. This is because, just like those types of vehicles, boats can be dangerous and the state wants to know what boats are on its waters. And just like cars and trucks and motorcycle, boats must go through the registration process as well. In the end, it’s easier to just go through the boat registration process just like it is with cars and trucks; there’s far less hassle in the end.

The DMV places boats into one of two categories: non-powered boats and powered boats. Powered boats are boats that have any kind of power source at all – whether it’s a legitimate power system or even just a small auxiliary power system. “Water of the state” – as in, water the state has claim to – is defined as all rivers, lakes, and streams no matter how big or small and all salt water that’s within 3 miles of land. These boats must go through the boat registration process; failing to properly register a boat will result in stiff penalties.

However, although it may seem like it, boat registration is not really all that difficult – or even that expensive, especially when you think of how much it costs to register some vehicles. For powered boats – which is the category 90% of all boats fall into and will be registered as – costs $24.00. For non-powered boats, which have not been required to be registered since June 2004, the fee is only $10 and is completely voluntary; it all depends on if the owner wishes to register that boat. Bear in mind that if you remove the boat’s power source at any time, there will be no refunds of this fee; if you add a power source, however, you must submit paperwork to the DMV notifying them of the change and pay the $24 boat registration fee.

To complete a boat registration, there are some steps you must go through. First, you need to complete the boat registration application that can be obtained either from the DMV office or printed from most DMV websites. Then you must locate your bill of sale, out-of-state title, invoice, etc and have the application fee ready. Then you simply take all the paperwork down to the DMV and register the boat.
