Should You Choose Homemade Solar Panels Over Solar Panel Kits? You Decide

December 20th, 2009

At the time a person makes the decision to check into alternative energy sources, more than likely they gravitate to solar power, and eventually to solar panels.  As a result of this they are faced with determining if they would be better off investing in solar panel kits or building their own homemade solar panels.

With such great options, which is the better choice?

If one is ready to make the decision as to whether or not solar panel kits are more superior than homemade solar panels or the reverse, it is extremely important to have an understanding of how they are different.

As you may have already guessed, a solar panel kit is just that, a kit where the solar panels come already put together. This in turn requires very little activity from the owner.  As an aside, many people buy their solar panel kits and then pay someone to install them, allowing them to enjoy their solar panels without the stress.

It is definitely worth considering, and seems like the smart way to go.

One of the serious challenges for people wanting to take this direction, though, is the cost factor.  With the average cost being between 8k-55k, this is too much for the average American.  The thing that is so shocking is that it can run even higher than that.

How then, do homemade solar panels compare with solar panel kits?  If you think of homemade solar panels being solar panels made from scratch, you are right on.  If you can master a few basic tools, and follow plans and videos, they are almost as easy as an IKEA bookshelf!

One of the best things about homemade solar panels vs solar panel kits is the cost factor, being that you can get started on a shoe string budget.  Most people are able to get a few things running on solar power for under $200.  If you could power something such as an RV and workshop for under $50, would that feel like success?  I know of one fella who did just that.  Not too shabby, eh?

Just because homemade solar panels are much less expensive than the solar panel kits you can buy online, you must know what it is you are doing.  If you are not armed with the correct knowledge, you set yourself up to risk losing both money and time.
